Can anyone recommend a good field guide for trees and shrubs, something that can be easily carried around?
I would prefer on for all of North America, not just the east.
Thanks.

A short review (http://forestry.about.com/od/aboutforestry/tp/id_tree_guides.htm).
I find that for botanical books, the key is a good, well, key. So, while it is an "Eastern" book, perhaps the "Tree Finder" might be a good choice.

Trees of Canada is excellant though not really a field guide. Great pictures and details but not too burdensome. I'll send you the ISBN and stuff in a PM Kin.
