Title: Snowy and Shrike on the spit
Post by: birddog2 on December 21, 2014, 06:59:12 PM
Today on the Leslie Street Spit I observed both a Snowy Owl and a Shrike on the North East section. The Shrike flew off before I got my binoculars out so I could not positively I'd which one it was, so I wondering if anyone else has spotted it lately?

Although I have not personally seen a Shrike on the Spit yet this season, I know a few others who have and they have identified them as Northern Shrike. Sadly the odds of a Loggerhead Shrike are extremely unlikely since they are an endangered species both provincially and nationally. Don't be disappointed though - a Northern Shrike is always a great sighting!

And Loggerhead Shrikes do not winter up here, while Northern Shrikes spend the summer further north. It's only during migration times both shrikes occur in southern Ontario.
