Title: BC Night Heron, Col. Sam; Harlequin pair, Sand Beach
Post by: nana on December 29, 2014, 03:05:14 PM
I flushed a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron near the overflow pond at Col. Sam today. It flew over to roost in the tall trees on the little island. Very streaked. Photos taken. There was a gorgeous pair of Hooded Mergansers in the pond; a young Snowy Owl out on the wharf but otherwise pretty quiet.

On the way home I popped in to Sand Beach Park and finally saw the Harlequin after numerous attempts. There was a female with it and I had excellent views thru another birder's scope. They weren't too far off shore, associating with Buffleheads. Stunning male!
