This looks like a possible hybrid between Barrow's and Common Goldeneye. The purple sheen indicates Barrow's, the facial spot is a bit pointed, but not elongated enough for a pure Barrow's. The back pattern looks more like a Common. There was a hybrid reported on Ontbirds in Hamilton yesterday. Where was this?

Thanks the bird isn't in Hamilton I've shot enough Whistlers with gun(years ago) and camera to know this one was different thought maybe a juvi Barrow's

I agree, it looks like a CommonXBarrow's hybrid. It appears to have characteristics of both species.
