Title: Amhurst Island
Post by: rgboy on February 14, 2008, 09:52:07 AM
Has anybody lately visited this island? I am going this weekend and I am wondering about owls. Is there any recent reports? It's first time, and if somebody can suggest where to go on the island. Thanks in advance.

Amherst Island is low on owl populations this year but if you decide to go check out owl woods. To get there take a left at the stop sign just after getting off the ferry. Go a few click left (east) you will see a sign on a small trail between two fields that says road not mainted. The field on the right has a large communications tower in it, walk in the trail ( you'll need skis or snowshoes) and at the end where the road starts to circle left you will see a small board where the entrance to owl woods is. You may see a barred; saw-whet (look real good to find these). At the end of owl woods there is a jack pine stand where there is usually a long eared owl or two up high in the trees. As for the rest of of the island you may see some rators or evern a short eared owl. The best bet however is wolfe island with lots of raptor species; snow owls, & bald easgels. eagles
