Title: Need assistance ID'ing this one
Post by: sedean on March 07, 2015, 07:22:15 PM
[attachment=1:wxmobdu1]IMG_7512.jpg[/attachment:wxmobdu1]Having a hard time identifying this one. Assumed it was a young red-tailed hawk but the markings don't match up, and can't find anything else that is obvious. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Note its' small and compact size black tail with narrow white stripes and entirely black back. Another hint is that this bird is a falcon.  Good luck.

To me this bird most closely resembles a Merlin. That'd be my first guess.

Thanks very much everyone! I was leaning towards a Merlin after the helpful hints from the "birdwatch ontario" posting last night. Appreciate the confirmation. We saw this beauty yesterday late afternoon on Unwin Drive, just before the playground/soccer field. I've seen tons of Red-tailed hawks in the area but never a Merlin.
