Title: check your bread crumbs....
Post by: gary yankech on March 20, 2015, 08:47:23 AM
I recently discovered 30+ beetles in my store bought bread crumb container. Under my microscope and hand lens, I learned that this is a very common pest of stored food, Stegobium paniceum, otherwise know as the "Drugstore Beetle". They are very small, and can pass as a flax seed. They are not harmful to humans but, my wife was utterly disgusted they they were munching away in our pantry. We ended up doing a major clean of our cupboards. I think I might have found another species, the Cigarette beetle but, still working on the id.

Ha ha - two months ago I found the same in a bag of rice that we bought from a local store. The rice grains ended up in the feeders at the backyard mixed with other seeds. At least the sparrows enjoyed it.
