Got my first butterfly of the season today in the Bellamy Ravine.

Mourning Cloak

This is one of the butterfly species that over-winters hidden amongst the branches, leaves and other debris that is scattered on the ground.

I chatted with local butterfly expert Barry Harrison about an hour earlier of my sighting and he told me that he, his brother Jeff and Leon Shlichter together had found 3 Mourning Cloaks a little earlier in the day when conditions were slightly better.  The rain moved in before I got out of the ravine.

The Bellamy Ravine is located in the east end of Toronto just south of the intersection of Kingston Road and Bellamy Road.

Beautiful shot Walter! It looks like a really fresh specimen. I'm heading over to Bestview Park shortly; here's hoping the sunlight persists for another couple of hours.

Nice shot Walter! I'd love to go butterflying with you some time....maybe Carden this summer!

Yes, would be great Gary but I think we'd need to hire a guide as I'm not really good with the ones up there or where best to look.  I'm hoping to go up for the Carden Festival this year.  Anything that I've seen has just been ones that have landed on the road.  :oops:  :lol:

I know of a few great Carden spots (on and off the road).....I do Dragonfly surveys up at Carden every year,  while there I've seen plenty of cool butterflies, Harvester, Fritillaries, skippers, and of course wildlflowers, birds etc......  You are welcome to come, and anyone else for that matter. All are welcome!
