I've been monitoring this forum for a few months now. Given that there are over 400 members, many of whom post sightings frequently and respond to questions promptly, it would seem that there is a sizeable active on-line birding community in the GTA. Based on that assumption I am puzzled as to why more people aren't participating in the annual on-line bird census run by Cornell University from February 15 to 18. (Great Backyard bird Count featured on their AllAboutBirds web site.)
Here's how I know that not many are participating. I counted the birds in my yard (according to their rules) and have posted 4 lists submitting the daily numbers for 15 species that I've seen. Since my postal code identifies me as a resident of East York I checked the results for East York only to find that I make up 4 of the 5 submissions accounting for most of the species seen. When I looked at Toronto results there were only 15 lists submitted - which could represent fewer than 10 participants
So my question is why aren't more avid birders participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count?
Just curious.

I participated..sent in 2 lists from 2 different locations..just wasnt birding in Toronto area this weekend. I suspect lousy weather was also an issue. Last I checked the results at their site, overall sightings lists and participation was way down.

I also participated in the GBBC this weekend. Even with the bad weather and having other plans, I still watched my yard and feeders. I saw 15 species over the four days, with the highlight being a lone Common Redpoll.
I thought that other Toronto birders knew about this count. I think next year I'll have to post info about the GBBC beforehand. If anyone is interested in seeing the results. Go to http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc (http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc)
