Title: Mockingbirds

Has anyone else noticed a lack of Mockingbirds lately?  I think their numbers were down last year, but I still haven't seen one this spring.  They're usually singing their hearts out from a high perch on the first warm day of spring.  Well, we've had a few of those days and I still haven't heard or seen one.  I'm thinking two hard winters in a row have put a dent in the population.

I used to see a pair in Downsview park late winter, early spring. This year I didn't see any until last week-end when I saw one. Hope they do a strong comeback soon.

There was one at the Leslie Spit on Saturday singing up a storm.

Looking on ebird, I can see they are being reported, but not with the same frequency we've been used to for the past 10 years or so.  

Of course 20 years ago, a Mockingbird would have been worthy of an ONTBIRDS report (if it had existed back then).

On Sunday, April 12, on the way to Sam Smith Park, I saw two Mockingbirds. I always see them near the Tim Horton's on Kipling, just a half mile north of Lakeshore. There was also one in the park, which I heard singing.

Northern Mockingbirds have been nesting in the Dupont and Symington area for ten years or so. Sometimes, they overwinter. I have a workplace on Adrian Avenue, north of Dupont and the rail overpass. The overgrown, fenced-in vacant lot on the west side of Symington and opposite Adrian is a possible nesting site. They frequent the rail corridor and other industrial lots as well as the residential yards along Adrian. I've seen two NOMOs together on a few occasions so far this spring and their song is common, especially in the morning and evening.

I'm so used to them that I've been guilty of not posting regularly on eBird although I've mentioned them on this forum in the past.
