Title: Need Help with a Call
Post by: Walter Fisher on April 20, 2015, 09:05:53 AM
I was in Gilford on the west shore of Lake Simcoe over the weekend and heard this call the entire time.  I was too busy to really think of what it could be but luckily got a few recordings of it on my iPhone.  They've since been edited and amplified so please turn your volume down slightly before listening.

You don't need to sign-up to Dropbox to listen, just click 'no thanks...' at the bottom of the pop-up window.

Listen here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/lmmjffmebjvrt3o/New%20Recording1.wav?dl=0), here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/be1tdvj0bgicqxd/New%20Recording2.wav?dl=0), and/or here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/rjnyuzh2tqrpb5j/New%20Recording3.wav?dl=0)

My thanks in advance for your help,
Walter :)

Interesting ...I'm afraid I'd be of little help.  Just to eliminate pet birds or exotic ornamental birds...this wasn't near a residential area or near a park known for ornamental birds, was it?

The reason I ask is because I was once at a rural gas station and kept hearing a really unusual call.  I got my bins out and looked for the bird for a good 5 minutes until I realized that the gas station owner had a caged bird hidden in a loose shack and that was the source of the calls I heard.  He must have been wondering what the hell I was doing.

Anyway, that's all I can really think of.  I'm curious to find out.

Hey Rotarran,

Gilford is a small community consisting of three or so blocks of mostly older single-storey houses and cottages by the lake.  The bird was traveling from treetop to treetop all around the neighbourhood.  It could very well be an 'escapee' but it sounded and seemed quite happy in it's surroundings which makes me wonder.

Hmm...to me it sounds like it's in the Flycatcher family.  I listened to the call of a few common species we get in Ontario and the closest I got was the Great Crested Flycatcher...but still not exact.  Is that bird still there?  Perhaps it would warrant a 2nd look.

Hey Rotarran,

Great Crested Flycatcher was my first guess as well.  Unfortunately I have no idea if the bird is still in the area or not as I'm back in the city now.  Judging by the responses (or lack thereof) on this and the Simcoe Board, me thinks it's an 'escapee'.

Thanks for your help!
Walter :)
