Title: Where are the Chipmunks and Gophers ?
Post by: Axeman on April 26, 2015, 09:46:15 PM
Has anyone else noticed fewer chipmunks and gophers out and about this spring ? The raccoons are moving about -- and the skunks...my lawn is all dug up...but I have not seen a single chipmunk and only one gopher....I'm wondering if the extreme cold froze them in their burrows...

Hi Axeman.  I haven't been seeing any Chipmunks or Gophers yet but have been seeing Red Squirrels.

Maybe you've missed the peak "seeing them" season? At the Rattray Marsh and Riverwood Park there were zillions of them about a month ago. Now they are getting harder to see during the day as they start raising their families and avoiding all the returning predators.

A chipmonk is filling his cheeks below my feeder as I write this. He's waiting for my hummingbirds to arrive because then I move the regular feeder from the shepherds hook to a spot where he has easy access - friendly little guy - he lets me stroke his back and hang onto his tail in exchange for a mouthful of birdseed! :)

By "gophers" are you meaning groundhogs/woodchucks? If so, I saw one a week ago in the median patch of grass on the DVP just north of Spanbridge. There's usually one there every year.
