Title: Common Nighthawk - Scarborough
Post by: Walter Fisher on May 28, 2015, 09:55:05 PM
At roughly 9:15PM I had a Nighthawk fly over the backyard.  It was flying eastward and doing it's usual flight call.  I'm in the Midland Avenue/Kingston Road area of Scarborough.

What a thrill for me as I really miss these birds at dusk.  Seeing and hearing the display dives of the males is something you soon won't forget if you're so fortunate to experience it now.

Walter :)

I had resident Nighthawks in my neighbourhood (South Etobicoke) up until a couple of years ago.  Only saw 2 or 3 last year, none so far this year.  :-(

I had a CONI calling repeatedly between 9:30 and 10:30pm last Monday and Tuesday (May 25 and 26). The location is just north of Dupont and the rail overpass at Symington in the east Junction. It was hunting around the former industrial buildings on Adrian Avenue. I checked my records and I hear them most years in this general time frame.

I finally saw my FOY Nighthawk this evening in Mimico, while doing my Swift watch.  That was the fourth (and final) night of the watch. So, over about 4 hours of observation in prime time and location, I only saw one.  :(
