Title: help with 2 from RIM trails
Post by: Khalli on June 02, 2015, 10:14:38 PM
Need help IDing these two taken today, sorry in advance for the photo quality.

I believe this first photo is of a juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

I have no clue what this is.

Any help or comments as always will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The first bird is a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, but not a juvenile: it's too early, and the markings on the head are too distinct. The lack of red is a bit puzzling, but I'd guess a first year female.

The second bird appears to be a flycatcher of some kind, possibly a Pewee.

Thanks Brian - yes the lack of red was what was throwing me off.

According to Godfrey's Bird's of Canada the red in the crown is missing in some adult  female Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers.

Hooray for paper books!  I thought Godfrey might make some mention of that plumage, but I was too lazy to get up and look for mine.

I think it's something like 10 or 15% of females have the black cap. Sibley mentions it in his book.
