Finally had a chance to get up to the Carden for some birding. Did not find all my target species but, managed to see and hear a few good birds and insects. On Sedge Wren Trail, scared up a female Ring-necked Pheasant. Its alarm call sounds like someone is crying. Did not get any shots because I was frozen in awe. Also missed the Loggerhead Shrike, but did see Bobolinks and Brown Thrashers among the shrubs. Heard a Black-billed Cuckoo. Sedge Wrens were calling but too fast and far to get shots. A Common Yellowthroat flew by close, but it was too backlit. Northern Harriers seen hunting off in the distance. Anyway, enjoy!

Very nice set.

Nice set Gary. I was there today, tried to look for the Sedge Wren - no luck; they were too far way. Saw the loggerhead shrike at a distance - not close enough to take any decent picture. However, earlier in the day I saw the one below, west of some of the active Bluebird nest boxes and south of where two Loggerheads were seen later. I am not sure if it is a Northern Shrike or a Loggerhead.

Great shot! I heard that there is a nesting pair of Loggerheads at box 50, if you were in that vicinity, high chance this is a Loggerhead. I agree, hard to tell from your photo.

Yes, Loggerhead Shrike. The thick mask with black above the eye and bill confirms it, also smaller bill. Northern Shrikes have migrated north for the summer, so they are not around here.

Yes....I do remember someone saying there are no N. Shrikes around now, good to know, thanks! Loggerhead it is.
