Title: Possible Hickory Hairstreak?
Post by: BetCrooks on July 12, 2015, 07:37:12 PM
I wonder if anyone with experience can tell me whether this is a Hickory Hairstreak? It meets some of the suggestions in the ROM guide but I'm not sure if I'm missing anything else. I don't want to mis-report it.

I would say that it is more likely a Banded Hairstreak but Hickory should not be totally ruled out.  Apparently these two species are not always as easy to ID as they once were.  May I suggest that you check the discussions on the Google Groups board Ontario Butterflies (https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en&fromgroups#!forum/onbutterflies) for further help.  Also, if you are planning to report your find on eButterfly (http://www.e-butterfly.org/#/), include your photo and an expert will correctly identify it for you.

Walter :)

Thanks for the helpful tips! This one looked quite different and was in a different location than the many Banded I saw that day--but it may well just be an unusual Banded. I'll try checking the discussions as you suggested.
