We've had a pair of Red-winged Blackbirds visiting our bird feeders this week. Unfortunately all the birds are dealing with some threats from a Sharp-shinned Hawk who seems to have a really good hiding spot (bird just pops up out of no where). The resident Red-tailed Hawks who nest on a tower at the corner of Scarlett and St. Clair have been scoping and occasionally dropping in to the backyard as well. It's feast or famine here. The birds suddenly come in and then gone in a flash again.
I swear I heard a Saw-whet Owl out back very early Sunday morning, just before dawn. I'm hoping for another encounter of sound or even better a sighting. I made a note of this but am not adding to my yard species list without further proof.

Hey Rob -- and anyone else out there....I don't have a pic but just curious about the ID of a hawk I see regularly....underside will be white with brown splotches...topside is brown..darker....fan tail...rounded wings...larger hawk....

Sounds like a juvenile hawk of some kind, most likely Red-tailed or Cooper's.
