I was wondering if anyone has info on coyotes sighted in the Port Credit area -- particularly to the east side...in the Adamson / Derry estate area (park) and along Richey Crescent to the spit at Cooksville Creek.

I heard a several howling (at least 2-3) on Christmas Day just east of Lakefront Promenade Park, in the Ontario Power Generation lands.

oh that's neat (is that the old coal / smokestack site ?)...I grew up on Richey Cres. and while I lived there (from 1976 to 2001), I had never heard or spotted a coyote....it never even entered my mind that they would be around...at some point after 2001 I know a warning sign was erected on the spit...but then it was taken down so I assumed that the coyote(s) had moved on...and recently I came across a report of a coyote running along Richey crescent...back in the 80's I knew that there was a population of coyotes in the Erin Mills area and they could be heard around Erin Mills town centre...and I remember the thrill the first time I heard them...actually I always get a thrill whenever I do hear them...I heard one howling during the day a month ago from my front porch (up here in Ayton)...that was a first for me...usually it's shortly after dark that I hear them...

Port Credit, like every area has a very healthy Coyote population. You could park on any side street and, given enough time, a Coyote would wander by.
I live in Port Credit, West of Mississauga Road, and I regularly see them.

hmmm....I might just try to test that out Meghan....I'll park on a side street and see whether I see a coyote first or a cop stops and asks what I'm up to...please be on standby to bail me out in case the officer doesn't buy my explanation :P
Richey Crescent is kind of in a no man's land....it's in between Lakeview and Port Credit...but more people have heard of Port Credit and before lakefront prices exploded, there was more prestige to saying I lived in Port Credit....
Meghan, your pix on flickr are just amazing.....are you a prof. photographer ? Your pix are like a nature documentary...I really loved the grizzly / moose pic. I have a favour to ask....could you try taking a pic of a coyote on Richey Cres. ? Or in the Derry / Adamson estate park ? I lived right what is now a park when the Derry's lived there....the Derry house was originally the Adamson guest house....Duncan Derry was a famous and extremely accomplished geologist....

That's a tall order Axe! You're putting a lot of faith in me but I'll do the best I can. I do a few stops during the week looking for them so I'll just add that to my list. That's probably a good a place as any to see a coyote. I am sure they are regular visitors to the park at the end of the street. I make no promises but I'll see if I can pull it off
I see you get your sightings from the same place as me:
"I saw a large brown coyote/coywolf? running down Richey Cres heading east towards Molasy Park. He was running quite fast and paid no attention to me"

@ Meghan...lol...I googled coyote Port Credit....At some point in the early 2000's the City had erected a coyote warning sign at the base of the spit alongside Cooksville creek.....but then they took the sign down...I haven't been that way in a few years...but I was just amazed that coyotes would venture into something narrow and potentially restrictive...
One of the neatest wildlife sightings I've ever had was of a red fox in winter...walking on smooth glass like ice on the frozen lake (maybe 200 m west of the spit and a similar distance from shore)...it looked like it was walking on water.

I stumbled on reports of coyotes at Dellwood Park (Cawthra / Atwater)...just amazed at the tiny green spaces that coyotes can earn a living out of.

I spent a week there...never say one or signs of any. I was quite surprised to see most of the trees cut down on the east side of the little creek that runs through that tiny park, so with no place to really hide out during the day,I think the coyotes sighted there are just moving through the area, there were no tracks in the mud or snow on the days I was staking it out. Just the usual over reaction from people who live near green space and then are shocked when they see wildlife

Seems like a quiet winter for coyote reports...the past few years have been filled with stories...or are we finally accepting that they are in our cities ?
