This afternoon I saw a lone Coyote at Downsview Park. This is probably the same one I saw in January of this year. The only difference this time is that it appears to be bolder than what it was in January. It came to within 30 meter to where I was standing. It was looking for voles. At the end it picked a nice spot on the slopes of one of the hills and sat down. A leash free dog came close to within 100 meters of the Coyote; luckily no encounter. I hope the Coyote stays away from humans and their leash free dogs for its own good. Such a magnificent animal.

Nice pix ! Healthy looking animal...is that anywhere near Rosseau Road ?
-
I presume you are talking about Rosseau Road in Wilson Heights, Toronto. Downsview park is not that far from the place. These pictures were taken inside the park - I am sure the Coyote moves around the area.

Great shots!

I think that's the same road...is that near Faywood ? Faywood P.S. ?

Faywood Road is on the east of Allen Road while the Downsview Park is on the west. I saw the Coyote again on Feb 6, 2017 in the same general vicinity within Downsview Park. He was sitting down and didn't care too much about my presence as he slowly closed his eyes. I left him to rest. I hoped he was just tired and not sick.

another great pic...thanks for posting it...I enjoy the images and hearing about coyote sightings in urban areas...and as I said, I lived in the general area as a wee lad....you can't really get close to coyotes here in a rural setting b/c they are hunted and winter is the prime hunting season -- farmers have downtime and hunting is subsidized social time plus the snow helps tire the coyotes out while the dogs chase them...
I'm a light sleeper...my dog Crosby...not so much. Last Wednesday night / Thursday a.m....I heard voices talking and it woke me up...I opened my eyes and as I do, Crosby goes from loud snoring to charging at the front door...giving out this low guttural growl..tail extended stiff and straight out....and then I hear it...coyotes howling...and they sounded really close...I get up and look out my bedroom window and in the moonlight I saw 2 coyotes...one was seated and the other standing...moving around slowly....their howls were answered by others in the bush...it was amazing....I have seen coyotes in the GTA maybe a dozen times...but never here in the country....I tried waking my wife up to take a look....she just got mad....anyway I moved downstairs hoping for a better view but they apparently saw me through the windows in the dark and scampered off.

Great story Axeman and thanks for sharing. The Coyotes are such a beautiful creature; I hope despite hunting their numbers are healthy in the rural areas. A natural balance must be maintained.
-
Northeastern Coyotes are very active and are quite vocal at this time of the year as it is the mating season.
-
well they really hunt them hard out here....in the winter....teams take hundreds out every winter....seems to make no impact...but...it makes no sense....the government could end it all by cancelling the bounty.
Oh here's a funny story....I think this goes back a year...it was last winter....farmer makes a claim for livestock depredation...cougar got a cow....makes a claim to township...they send an investigator and the investigator concludes that yes indeed a cougar got the cow....so township paid and in advance and sent the claim to OMAFRA....who sent another investigator who said the cougar didn't kill the cow...the cow died of a broken neck running from the cougar...and then the cougar predated upon the cow...and declined the claim....lol...oh don't worry...the farmer got his money....the township, in considering the difficulty of trying to collect the money back from the farmer decided to chalk it up as a lesson learned....I'm too afraid to ask what lesson did they learn.

This morning (Nov 17, 2018) while walking in the park I saw the same Coyote again. He was walking on freshly dumped snow and looking for his next meal. Great to see him over the years in the same general vicinity. He is still keeping his healthy look.

Those photos are spectacular...I can see why people get confused looking at an animal like this and think they're seeing a wolf....ears are more rounded....muzzle seems wider and not as pointy...and he probably looks heavier than he really is...
Which park is this?

The park is Downsview Park, at south-east corner of Sheppard Avenue and Keele Street. A week later I met up with a gentleman who told me that this one could be a female and apparelty she is pregnant according to 'Coyote Watch' group - I wasn't aware of this group.
-
Oh I thought their mating season was Jan to march -- hence the increased encounters and calling.....yikes....she wouldn't be giving birth at a good time....

Yeah, no way "she's" pregnant now.

In April this year I saw a Coyote again in Downsview Park. However, it was clear from the photos that she had babies - it might the first time for the Downsview Coyotes, at least first time I have noticed a nursing Coyote there.

Great set of pix....yep....she definitely had herself some pups...good luck to them...pic 2 her ears go back, pic 3 ears back and tail between legs...don't usually see that in urban coyotes encountering people...guessing her pups are triggering the reaction. She is indisputably a coyote...the male you caught really does have a wolf like look to his face and colouration...(he's definitely a coyote just remarking that I can see how people can make a mistake in ID.)
I really enjoy your pix - thanks for posting them.

Another encounter on Oct 5, 2019. The Coyote was about to cross a newly created trail in the park when I took this photo - his attention was not on me. However, I heard from a friend that in the Spring the mother Coyote showed some aggressiveness towards him while a young was beside her - I think that's expected from a protective mom. Despite all the warning sign posted in many places in the park, people are still letting their dogs run free. I had to show one gentleman this photo before he was convinced to leash his tiny Pomeranian.

Another great pic...even with our large coyote population in west grey / southgate, you rarely see them...let alone get to take a pic.
Aren't the dogs supposed to be leashed anyway?

Another sighting of a magnificent Coyote in the park on January 23, 2021. I started this thread in 2016, 5 years later they still show up in the park from time to time despite the increase of people and their dogs - not sure if it is the same that I saw in 2016 or is it one of the offspring. I first saw it when I heard its howling in response to a fire truck or ambulance on Keele Street nearby. At that time it was well hidden in the brushes. So why give the presence away by howling? Anyway she promptly left the area when people took notice of her.

It's easy to see why people think they're so much bigger than they really are with that magnificent coat....great pix...great thread.
I used to live in that area in the early 70's when I was a kid...
Urban wildlife fascinates me....thanks for posting the pix.
