Nice photos.

I don't see any black in the tail of the ptarmigan, as Rock and Willow Ptarmigans have, so I wonder if it could be a White-tailed Ptarmigan, even if Yellowknife is well east of their regular range.

In some of my other pics they show black tail feathers when the tails are open just a bit farther than the one I posted. Those feathers seem hidden with the tails folded in. I added a shot with the tail showing some black. See what you think, these were my first looks at Ptarmigans.

Okay, I see. I don't have much experience with ptarmigans either.
