Title: Finch or Grosbeak?
Post by: BetCrooks on May 03, 2017, 05:11:58 PM
OK, so I'm at a park that has resident Goldfinches and I figure I'm looking at yet another, even though at the time, it felt and looked "odd" particularly because the face was grey, not greenish but clear grey. But I know they are moulting, so I took a couple of photos and went back to watching a Parula.
Now I'm not so sure. The bill seems the wrong colour too and various things.
Is this actually a female or imm. Evening Grosbeak?
It was seen May 3 at Lakeside Pk in Mississauga, in the woodlot at the west side of the park, moving steadily through the trees with lots of other migrants.

Thanks! If you know the park, you'll know that it's a tiny woodlot with very degraded habitat, so unfortunately the bird will likely move through quickly, but I will report it on eBird. It's just such an odd bird to see at this time of year and at that location. I'm glad I took its photo!
