Our best friend picked up a squirrel proof bird feeder (at a garage sale, I think) and since she had no intention of using it she gave it to me. It's a 7511C, very similar to the third one down at the following link:

...and so far the birds have completely ignored it! It's not the type I would get but the price was right so I figured I'd give it a try anyway. I know if I put up the old gazebo feeder the sparrows would appear in droves because there are dozens of them around. Anyone else have experience (and success) with this type of feeder? O well, there's always the hummingbirds! :)

Hey Howie,
Our family had the exact same feeder some 25 years ago or so and it never really attracted much bird-wise - House Sparrows mostly. The squirrels liked it though. I can remember my dad trying everything he could to stop the little critters but in the end they won out of course. My nephew and I brought the feeder to an end by blowing it up with fireworks!
Good luck with it.
Walter :)

It took a couple of weeks but the sparrows have finally taken over the new feeder. I've also seen a house finch and the odd cardinal but the chickadorks still seem to prefer the hummingbird feeder! Btw Walter, how's the butterfly situation at Rosetta? :)
I'm actually hoping the squirrel tries to rob the feeder (to see if it works!) but so far he seems happy to remain on the ground and feed on seeds dropped by the sparrows.
