Snippet of a mystery bird. Any guesses?
Will post whole photo later revealing identity, assuming I got it right
in the first place. Those with ID skills will hopefully edify me if I'm wrong
Let's start with an easy one.

Is number 2 a Horned Lark?
-
Yes, it is indeed a Horned Lark, photographed off Hall's Road in Whitby.
See photography section for entire picture.

How about a dirty blue jay for #3?
My avatar is a mystery bird challenge too. Others have guessed it in past years.
-
No, the bird is not a dirty bluejay, but I like the way you think.
Dirty indeed.
Try something a little more diminutive.
Is your avatar a dirty Red-eyed Vireo?

-
Probably a juvenile since there is barely a hint of red in the eye.
If that is not subdued red then maybe a Tennessee Warbler.
Maybe start a thread on mystery bird eyes. That's disturbing
even for Hallowe'en.

No. hint: bird is on the Ontario checklist but no nesting record exists

Avatar - Your alter ego may be a bird I've never encountered, not having seen that many species yet.
That black eye-line with black above the eye doesn't ring a bell for me.
Certainly a Worm Eating warbler has prominent peri-ocular festooning,
a female Bay-breasted warbler is more subtle with glands. so that's not likely,
even a Dowitcher has some kind of eye-line. I don't know what your avatar is.
I simply don't have the experience to nail it. I'm even getting a headache thinking
about it.
-
yes it's a worm-eating warbler
-
Gadwall for #5?
-
The detailed breast does belong to a Gadwall.
See full photo in photo section.
I guess Gadwall are getting some attention after all.

yes it's a worm-eating warbler
How embarrassing!  I just realized that Worm Eating Warbler is the name of the bird, not just the description of its feeding preference...
