While not the greatest shot I was fortunate to have a close look at this Black-backed Woodpecker in Algonquin Park.

Wow, lucky you. Lovely image. I was at the park on Sunday Feb 18 and saw a report in visitor center of one seen in Spruce Bog around 11 in the morning. By the time I ended up going there it was nowhere to be seen. Also missed the Pine Grosbeak.

Cool you got a shot at all. My only encounter was from many, many feet away in an Edmonton park. No chance for a photo.

Thanks everyone. That would have been my sighting at 11. I was just standing in the parking lot trying to hand feed the Gray Jay when I saw it out of the corner of my eye as it flew from one tree to the next. I called over someone else who was there and we were able to find it again. Just a lucky catch and to be honest I wasn't even sure if the photo would turn out due to the slow shutter speed (1/125s) and all the branches.
