Title: My gear issues

Hello, I'm new to this forum.   I use a Nikon D5100 and a Sigma 150-500 lens. I just returned from a photo trip to Sudbury only to find my pictures, grainy and not the normal quality I am use to. I live out in the country and do not have internet, my mobile I do, but not a computer connection so my camera has had no firm where update,ever, could that be a factor? I used a variety of settings to compare my usual quality, which is normally crisp and clear, still grainy,  it never changed. It does not matter if I zoomed in or not. Few days before I left i was photographing my back yard birds and they were not grainy.
Any ideas ?

What mode were you shooting in? Aperature priority (A)? Or one of the Scene modes? Auto?

Usually graininess is too high an ISO. If you were shooting in A did you accidentally thumb dial up to a higher ISO?

hopefully it's not something major!

I was trying (A) for the first time. I was happy about the lighting, just grainy. I also played with the ISO settings too, no difference on the lower settings compared to a higher settings. I've used this combo camera and lens for a few years, I have never had this issue before. I was going to send it off to get cleaned, see if that helps?

Not sure cleaning with make a difference, try shooting in P mode and let the camera pick the settings. Look at your images and see what they look like. Mind you I only shoot in P mode with my D7200 & 80-400 VR lense, but its worth a try to find out if it is your equipment or a setting or 2 that are off.
