Title: Chick or girlfriend
Post by: Ally on June 19, 2018, 07:35:06 PM
I saw this on my late afternoon walk, so sweet and I really want to find out whether he is feeding his chick or his girlfriend. Please help.

Thanks,

My feeling is that it's a chick, but I don't know for sure.

I would say it's a young bird being fed. There's a lot of speckling along the sides of the breast. Adults have a clean white breast all the way across.

Thank you so much. I found another young later this week, sort of creamy yellow. lovely to see different stages of them.

I would say adult feeding young. We've had Downies and Hairies visiting our feeder for many years and we have never seen an adult male feeding an adult female. What we have seen time after time is the adult male chasing the adult female off of the feeder.
Besides, it's that time of year, we've been seeing the adults feeding young in our yard for some time now.
