Title: Identification of bird
Post by: byoung on July 23, 2018, 12:41:07 PM
1) Toronto suburbs
2) Rust-coloured cap (male only)
3) White rump
4) Mostly brown
5) Larger than a robin, maybe the size of a small crow
6) Unless it was just drinking water, seemed to "hunt" like a robin, i.e. searching for grubs/worms on or in the ground.
6) Really "weird" call, which identified to me that it was not a bird I had heard or seen before.  It was quite "vocal", but not a "pretty" song.  Not as
guttural as a raven's Croak, but lying more in that direction than a song-bird.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a Northern Flicker hunting its preferred meal of ants.

Thanks.  Based upon the call, that is likely what was prowling the the area.  Didn't notice the spots or red-band behind the head, but maybe it was a younger specimen.
