Title: Please advise: Black Thistle Seeds
Post by: orchidpoet on July 25, 2018, 02:08:56 PM
I am trying to use the black thistle seeds to replace the black sunflower seeds, because it leaves less noticeable mess under the feeder.

The house finches (the only birds visiting my feeder) do not seem to be too excited. Why?

I read the black thistle seeds is the most favorable finch food, and more expensive. Is the black thistle the same as Nyjer?

Thanks!

My understanding is that the term black thistle seeds is a misnomer - the seeds are from a type of African daisy.  Nyjer is a trade name.  House finches do love them, as do our goldfinches.  We've also had pine siskins on the feeder, and mourning doves and juncos on the ground feeding on this seed.
