I am surprised you were able to get shots of the pintail on land. The ice at Col Sam Smith this morning has melted partway into the inlet. With the strong winds the ducks were gathering near the shore in the inlet so you could get relatively close.

Wonderful set of photos and lovely description of your adventure. Northern Pintail is definitely a bonus. Colonel Sam also has a Snowy Owl that sits in the dock and hunts on land later in the day.
