It's exciting to hear the various chirps they are able to produce.
-
I would like to think they have facial expressions too.
-
Two Red-breasted nuthatch at once!
I've only seen one RBN for a brief visit (a few minutes)
before it took off with a frenzied group of chickadees.
Now there are two Chickadees and a squirrel below the feeder.
Occasional visit to the feeder by a pair of White-breasted nuthatch
but they may be absent for days at a time.
I would go out and check the ice situation on Reesor pond (south)
because I anticipate Ring-necked ducks will visit once there is
open water. Unfortunately it is raining. I want to set-up a place
to sit near the water while there is till ice and no ducks to bother.
At least that's the plan, if I ever get around to it.

The nuthatches bully chickadees! those tiny feisty things. There were two Gold finches, 80% moulted into summer plumage also came and they fought with each other. others have been quite friendly, even the red shouldered back birds, cow birds, cardinals and sparrows will let the chicadees take seeds, only the nuthatches!

Funny set of interaction photos. Oh yes, Nuthatches are bold and very talkative.
-
And people wonder why I refer to them as nutcases! I was in the back yard last week, the feeder was empty and the chickadees and nuthatches were around so I put out an empty hand and a nuthatch perched and started pecking at my fingers! Talk about biting (ok, pecking) the hand that feeds you! Anyway, I filled the feeder and everybody seemed happy, except for the male cardinal who likes to eat alone! :)

The nuts don't come to my hand, they change direction in midair, breaks my heart every time!!

My once brazen chickadees have started doing that but the nuthatches are fearless! Be patient (and very still) and they WILL come to you. Also make sure they can see the seeds in your hand. Good luck!
