Title: Red-headed Woodpecker, Balm Beach, Tiny Township
Post by: silverfoxx on June 29, 2019, 09:36:15 AM
In a lifetime of summers spent at Balm Beach I have never seen a Red-headed Woodpecker. This week I discovered a pair flying back and forth to their nest - a hole about 40 ft above ground in a tall Sugar Maple.
The Red-headed Woodpecker is listed as “Special Concern” on Ontario‘s endangered species list. Their numbers in Canada declined throughout the 20th century, and most rapidly in Ontario - by 80% from 1970 to 2016. Their population is estimated to be as less than 1,400 in the province.

Those are not good odds for seeing one and yet, you did.
Maybe you have lottery potential.

I've seen Red headed Woodpeckers at Balm Beach over the the last 3 or 4 years along Second Street.

Where did you spot the nest?  Maybe I'll go for a walk after it stops raining.

Napper at the beach for another week 8)

NICE ONE!!!

It's too bad it's such a great pic....if you blurred it a little...OK a lot...you could say you caught an IBW!

That must have been a thrill.

For Napper
Sorry I didn’t see your question earlier. In case you are back at the beach the nest was on Belgrove Crescent.

A Red-headed woodpecker is a new visitor to my bird feeder this summer along with a Scarlet Tanager. The woodpeckers' been feeding on shelled peanuts and Dollar store suet. I didn't see what the Scarlet Tanager eats.

Porshaah,  Where are you in relation to Centennial Park on Vimy rd.?

Years ago I spotted a Red Headed Woodpecker there and a Tufted Timouse at house on Left side looking out over the water.

Napper:) p.s. Its not summer yet.
