Title: Barred Owl
Post by: gary yankech on January 05, 2020, 04:39:44 PM
Went out to Amherst Island,  to find owls in the "Owl woods"  with my two sons on Janury 2nd. They had not seen an owl. We were skunked for owls (and birds in general) on the island, despite checking every cedar and pine, and cruising slowly up and down the island roads.  But, on the road back to the 401, my son spotted a Barred owl on a fence post. Thye had a blast photographing it.

Nice shot Gary, glad you got this one. I visited Owl Woods a few weeks back and found nothing. I did notice many dead and uprooted trees throughout the woods area. Never saw this before over their in that specific location.

Beautiful photos indeed. Yes, I heard the Amherst ha been very quiet this year; however, nearby Wolfe Island appears to be more active with birds. Today, a Gyr was reported seen in the Island.

yes, I saw that! A great find. I know Mark Read, he lives on the island, I wonder if he was the one who saw it.

I can completely relate to your kids enthusiastic response given the opportunity to photograph
a bird with a mug, featuring those coal-black eyes like something out of the X-files.
A broad flat face is hard to dismiss, like an orangutan's countenance, full of intrigue by virtue
of its projecting an arresting visage that is ripe with fanciful intimation. A look that drills into
your consciousness as only an owl's stare can deliver. I wonder if they dreamed about an owl
that night?

Very nice shot too. Lots of space and omni-directional light that carries the environment to
the viewer almost as effectively as actually being there. A photograph with implied sound and
ostensible chill. I feel like I was actually there.

Thanks for the detailed observations!
