Title: merlins nesting in Walkerton / Hanover area?
Post by: Axeman on March 09, 2020, 10:29:19 PM
Some friends of mine -- non-birders -- have told me that they have a pair of merlins that nest high up in a tree on their property (located between Hanover and Walkerton). Apparently the pair are back already and nesting.

They report that they often find bird heads at the base of the tree.

Wondering what the odds of this are and the similar species that might be mistaken for a merlin....Perigrine's and Kestrel have different nesting habits than the merlin...

Merlin are not too uncommon, so it's very plausible. Sharp-shinned or Cooper's Hawk would be alternatives.

Thanks....they based their ID on calls....so I'll go in armed with the calls of all 3...hopefully this pandemic lockdown ends prior to the migration.....fall migration.

I enjoy being a hermit....but on my terms...not being forced to be one.
