I take my camera with me whenever I go out birding - the lens camera combo has longer reach than my binocular. When I submit checklists I also try to attach some of the photos that I took. One such photo of a female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker from Meadowvale Conservation Area has now made its way to Cornell Lab's All About Birds - check this out.

When you sign up for a free eBird account it is somewhere in the fine print :) that any images you upload are used in The Macaulay Library. With the amount of photos uploaded anyone that finds one in a species description has done well due the the shear volume uploaded.
1. It creates a permanent home for documentation associated with eBird records at the Macaulay Library.
2. It allows eBird, the Cornell Lab, and its global partners to engage emerging communities of nature enthusiasts.
3. It enables eBirders to become a richer source of real-time information and knowledge about birds in our world.

Paul summarized it very well - once you submit the photo with the checklist you also give eBird the permission to use it, maintaining your copyright info of course. They informed me through an e-mail that the photo is selected for explore etc. I believe they are also doing a proof of concept with video files attached to checklist. We will know soon how it went.
