Do you know what insect the robin is holding in the last image? At first I thought it was a cicada but, on closer inspection, it looks more like the german(?) wasps that have taken over my hummingbird feeder. A week ago my hackberry tree was full of beautiful ripened berries and I was hoping the robins wouldn't discover them until after the waxwings and/or the grosbeaks arrived, but no luck. The robins have pretty well stripped the tree of berries but they completely ignore the wasps as they (the wasps, that is) take turns chasing the hummers completely out of the yard!

I think it's a cicada. I saw it before the robin took it. It belonged to a sparrow, but I scared it away when I opened the door. And it's too big for the young robin, it would spit it out, and kept begging, the mother fed it again and again, and they went back and forth several times. I only have another photo, hope it helps.

Thanks Ally, I think you're right. The wasps are big but not that big! It's just after 8:30am and the female hummer is enjoying her quiet time at the feeder because the wasps haven't arrived - yet! :)

That sounds lovely. Do share photos please. I haven't seen a hummer this year.

Very funny series and lovely discussion on hummer. On Sunday morning I spent close to two hours in Riverwood Conservancy in Mississauga, hoping to see a hummer - no luck, I am on the same boat as you are Ally.

I saw a Hummer on the weekend. It was perched on a wire enjoying
the resonance.
