It's 8am and I just spoke to my son who is observing several hundred monarchs roosting in Veteran's Point Gardens in Ajax. VPG is at the foot of Harwood Avenue just north of the waterfront. It's overcast and cool so the butterflies will probably hang around until mid morning, or until the sun warms things up!

Wow, that must be such a scene. Wish I could get up that early. And does he have photos?

Yes Ally, he has lots of photos (5D IV) but no video. I just spoke to him a few minutes ago. He was waiting for them to take off, gave up and went for breakfast, returned to the park and they were all gone - what a nimnul (Mork and Mindy, probably before your time)!
My third monarch just emerged, expect the last two tomorrow. As expected my hummers left yesterday after having breakfast at the feeder, and the neighbour with the other feeder said the same thing happened to her so that's it for another year but I'll leave the feeder up for migrants until the first hard freeze.

Thank you for the update. I can imagine how disappointed he must feel. I experience a mini version of the same disappointment almost every day going bird watching. Hope he will share pics.

That would have been a hell of a shot(s). The waiting game is for pros.
Amateurs don't have the metal for that ordeal and they don't get paid
to wait, as the pro do. Like Ally, I tend to feel sorry for your son and
his missed opportunity, but he uses a 5D Mk II, so I'm not all that sorry
because I'm not as well-adjusted as Ally and their is that jealousy thing
to deal with. This story and Ally's commiseration with it gives me an idea
for a blog, which I may write some time.

Wow, I somehow helped :D :D Can't wait to read your blog. It's a comprehensive learning experience. As you may have concluded I'm not a native English speaker. I'm so ever grateful for all of your patience.
