Never thought I would see one in my backyard until today. This morning as I looked through the patio door I saw this Barred Owl sitting on my backyard cherry tree, looking intently at the squirrels who congregated around the feeder. No other birds in sight. The owl showed a lot of interest at the squirrels, it even flew over one a few times but didn't see it catching anything. Its interest peaked when a smaller red squirrel showed. after 10 mins of watching I left the owl sitting on the tree. Later around lunch time I saw the red squirrel - it appeared to survive the morning encounters.

Outstanding luck.
Physicists make their own luck …
I read that somewhere.
I have mice in the backyard, so by all means, send that owl my way.
I have a nice perch for it.

Oh my, I know birders chase after birds. This is the first time I hear a bird search out for a birder, albeit a famous one.

Nice!!!! Funnily enough I have heard one for the first time (2 different nights) for the first time ever a couple of weeks back -- previously I've only heard them on TV (watching Animal Planet's "Finding Bigfoot")
Thanks -- It was great to see this pic....as for the red squirrel...did it have feathers hanging from it's fangs?

Wow, that must be a pleasant shock!

Wow, you could set up a barred owl portrait studio and invite us. :)
Great photo!

I love the expression on its face and the way it's peering down...open to interpretation....here in North America, the owl is a symbol of wisdom...in India, owls are fools...makes me laugh....one of the terms for a flock of owls is a parliament....lol....wisdom or fools? lol

Haha, what a suggestion. I'll go with fools.
