Title: Anybody got sightings of warblers?
Post by: Ally on April 15, 2021, 07:35:25 PM
Late afternoon today, I saw a small bird flipping on top my neighbour's tree, didn't get good look, but somehow the back and the belly got me think it might be a Nashville Warbler.

It can be anything you want it to be. No warblers seen in the woodlot, but I did spot a single Brown creeper ... the first of the year for me. Nothing but cowbirds, RWBB, chickadees, cardinals and common woodpeckers. Heard a Red-bellied WP last evening but too deep into the woodlot and the light was feeble. Still have juncos in the BY. No chipping in the BY yet. Although Myrtle and Pine warblers can be seen in April they are too few in number so the odds are not in your favour unless you are in a hot-spot where migratory birds are funneled through and therefore concentrated.

Thanks for your reply. I should not have been so greedy. I could have got a better look instead of going inside to pick up my camera. I saw several creepers in the James Garden on Wednesday. I also saw a chipmunk there who peed about 2 meters away from me. I mean, real water coming out that kind of pee, I wonder whether that was some kind of warning.

Nah, it just likes you and is staking its claim or just trying to impress you with its range ans accuracy. Works for me. It might have been nibbling on a diuretic plant. Or, you may have just imagined the whole thing, as well as the warbler. Ain't the imagination grand. It's so much better than real life, which has a tendency to suck.

Few yellow rumps are around now.....probably Palms and Pine should be showing up soon,  then the B&W and Nashvilles ... and the whole gang next. Seems to be abit earlier this year for early arrivals/ sightings so may be a few more around by next weekend

I heard a couple Pine warblers while at the Pinery Provincial park yesterday.

A very small bird this morning in the Crab apple tree just on the other side of our back fence. I heard it before I could spot it. After listening to Warbler sounds online it could be a Bay Breasted Warbler.
Harsh lighting right now, looking into the Sun.

Bay-breasted Warbler is one of the later warblers, so unlikely to be around yet. Yellow-rumped and Pine are fairly widely reported, and a few Palm.
"Very small" make me think kinglet, but you might have ruled that out already.

fingers crossed. They should arrive soon! Forgot that weather in Spring can be so changeable.

Update: A Bay-breasted Warbler was reported from Kincardine today, so I guess it's possible.

Eastern Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) warbler spotted at Ashbridges Bay. I might be able to drop by the local mini-swamp on the coming week end to check for the presence of same. They usually arrive at that location (EYR and Palm).

The call was distinctive and matched what i found online, I was expecting a Black and White or a Pine. It did not stick around, I went out with my camera a few minutes later in bright morning sunshine but it was gone.

Kinglets that visited two weeks ago made only single notes while in our apple tree.

BTW it is snowing in Milton currently April 20, 2021 @ 6:45 pm

Ruby-crowned Kinglet has a very different call than the Golden-crowned Kinglet's soft high-pitched notes.

You are right about changeable weather. The migration has stalled for a bit with the wintery weather, but should pick up now with the warmer weather coming in.
