I'm fairly certain that he's a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Are you still in Canada? I think I saw that same woodpecker in a documentary yesterday, seems to be in Europe.

Well that's a coincidence. You are quite correct, that species of woodpecker does not assalt the trees of North America as far as I know.
To give you a hint as to which part of Europe that particular bird heralds from, the locals call them större hackspett.

My guess - Sweden.

Germany was a good guess, given the umlaut in the name, but this one hails from a little further north. Although they seem to be fairly common across europe and central asia.
