Post by: JTF on May 23, 2008, 07:59:49 AM
I currently have a Nikon D50, has anyone used the 80-400mm AF-S VR on a nikon DLSR body for birding.

I knew a lady at the SPNC using the Nikon 80-400 for a few years.  Although it is VR, but it does not appeared to be AFS in the autofocus drive.  Please see this link:

However, I understood that the Sigma 50-500 is an excellent choice if one is to choose a zoom vs. the prime lens.  At Pelee, I met a photographer using the Nikon 300 2.8 with a teleconvertor. He was shooting at ISO1600 with a excellent noise ratio. Bear in mind the D300 focus much faster than even the D200.  Please see this link for the Sigma review by users:

Wait and see what opinion may come from other experienced bird photographers.

I have been using a 80-400 VR lens with my D70. It's not a bad lens but very slow with the autofocus.
