Title: Red Headed Woodpecker (s), Tiny Township
Post by: Napper on August 22, 2021, 11:18:01 AM
Again on the deck this morning when I heard the distinctive call of Redheaded Wood Peckers.
A Group of at least four were in the tall trees behind the house. I could only get a couple really bad images of an immature bird.
Earlier, across the lane I spotted a pair of birds that looked like a Scarlet Tanager pair. The camera was safely locked in the vehicle :(

I wasn't kidding when I said they were bad images. They were a long ways off.
This is Cropped and shrunk with a little auto sharpen. Not Black and white.

Apparently they're appearing up in the Parry Sound area too...someone in our area posted a vid clip of one feeding at a hummingbird feeder on the cottage association FB page last week...in the clip a RTH female buzzes in close briefly and then is chased off by a male RTH who must have been hovering or perched nearby but neither go after the RBW

Thanks for posting it even if you're not happy with the image -- seeing "real" pix helps some of us with ID and also gives inspiration for birds to watch out for...plus now gives me the impetus to post some pix my kid took of some bears she saw up at the cottage -- she was passenger in vehicle and using phone...pix aren't great but a thrill for her and me nonetheless.

It's better than my shot of a Red-headed woodpecker, which is a blank screen. Admittedly the image could use a few more pixels.

Thanks for that ! I had to shrink the image down to 250kb to post it here, the size of a postage stamp.

Yesterday, early morning two very vocal Redheaded woodpeckers in the tree across the lane. then a Pileated flew over the yard.
This morning similar thing happened minus the Pileated.
On our two hour dog walk this evening I noticed more Red Headed Woodpeckers in the trees along  the little laneways that are near the beach here.

I have some Pics, no time to post them busy busy..

From a couple days ago, was off quite a ways.
It seems they are everywhere. Had a Juvenile today in Oak Tree for 20 minutes across lane..
One Juvenile flew over us while on driveway today as well..Learning more Sounds of this species, they can sound like a Racoon at times.

In note form. The last few weeks have been really hectic for us.
The only time we have a little peace is between 7 - 9 am sitting on the deck and that is when it is the most fun.
I believe after a little research this is Female Great Crested Flycatcher.
I have never seen a Female only the males.
From Last week.
Just beat this storm home today.
p.s. No Hummingbirds at our spot in Tiny Township the last 4 days until yesterday one way up in the canopy following a Dragonfly. None at the Flowers.

How do you know it's a girl, because of the eye make up she was wearing?

She filled out a form advising that she identifies as "she / her". Napper is very good about these things.
