Title: Bird @ Dupont & Ossington

Hi this is my first time posting on this board. I am fairly new to birding.
I have a question I live a Ossington and Dupont and every night a hear what I think is a
bird singing and flying around.
Is any one living in the area?
Could it be a bat?

I doens't seem to be a song more like a call???

If you are easily hearing it, it is not likely to be a bat.  Bats squeak at a really high frequency that is barely hearable by some and not at all by others.

Can you describe the call a little more?  Number of notes, change of pitch or frequency... that sort of thing.

Most likely a common nighthawk - have seen and heard them in the area and even right downtown in the entertainment district

if it sounds like a lot of short fast squeaks  than it could also be chimney swifts

Yes I think it is chimney swifts, but when I hear and see them during the day they are making a different call...
is it possible that they have a different one at night?

I only hear the call at night it starts about 10:30 and goes til about midnight. It is very loud and I can hear it coming from far away.
It sounds like screeches, very close to gether.
It sounds as though the bird is fluttering.

o in that case i dont think it is a chimney swift i only here them in the day time and in the evening not after it gets dark though so i think you might want to reconsider on what it might be

The description could also match an Eastern Screech Owl.

Go to a website that has bird recordings and confirm on that basis. Lots of information available at your fingertips!

K so the mystery bird of Dupont and Ossington continues......
I was talking with my roomate and we came up with this sound....

Detta-deh,  Detta- deh,  Detta dehhhhhhhhhh.
The third call is always the longest and it starts over.

My roomate has said that she is now hearing it during the day as well. She said it also makes a different sound during the day along with the detta-deh call.

I went on some bird websites and listened to some sounds, its doesn't sound like a nighthawk.
It kinda sounds like a Northern Flicker...but I don't think they tend to fly at night.

Yes I am pretty sure its a nighthawk as well.
I heard the nighthawk calling last night.
