Title: More backyard visitors
Post by: Shortsighted on May 11, 2022, 05:52:35 PM
The male oriole returned several times to the Hummingbird feeder. The male grosbeak also returned, including the female (which I did not photograph) and a pair of goldfinch were here much of the day.

I needed a perch for my most recent backyard visitors and therefore I perused the ACME catalogue figuring that if it served Wiley coyote so well it might also prove of some benefit to me. I sort of knew what I wanted. Something simple, yet elegant and definitely without the need for batteries and without WiFi capability. I wanted something truly Canadian. None of this Made in China nonsense. My search for a perch struck gold when I saw a birch perch. That would be perfect. My birch perch search located just the right length and diameter.
Now installed, both the orioles and the grosbeaks found it to be ... rather adequate. I'm satisfied! Now all I need is more even lighting. Not today ... maybe tomorrow.

Hey, I'm made in China!

The female RB grosbeak does not stay as long as the males.

Awesome backyard birds. Unfortunately this year I didn't get any on my blossoming cherry trees - they all skipped my area it seems and headed straight to their breeding ground.

A rainy day did not deter those visitors.

No new visitors but the present guests are willing to stay, especially since I now have an ACME birch perch.

Be careful. If you get that bird any sharper, I might be able to see you in the reflection of their eyes.

If you can see me in the reflection within the bird's eye you will be able to confirm that I have a rather bland countenance, a straight face, a poker face, a mug without expression. Take my word for it. I will, however, offer you my shadow, but only because it serves to demonstrate the effect of atmosphere on the colour of sunlight. The foliage appears shifted to the yellow because the burden of fine particulates within the air close to the horizon tends to absorb/block the short wavelength light at the blue end of the spectrum, thus allowing only the longer wavelength light to pass around the dust. My shadow blocks the direct rays of sunlight and my blue funk resurrects the spectrum to make the foliage within the umbra of my shadow appear as a rich green once more. I bet you didn't know that I had an umbra. The ACME catalogue has everything that you can imagine.
