Title: Streetside Woodlot (added photos)
Post by: Shortsighted on August 27, 2022, 08:46:19 AM
I took a brief walk along the street between 6:30 - 7:30 am and noted a loose group of migrants at mid-story comprising mostly vireos (Red-eyed and Philadelphia) as well as a few species of warblers (Am. Redstart, Magnolia and Cape May, and perhaps N. Parula). Rarely did any of them venture closer to the under-story, or let's just peg it at under 3 meters. The vireo were the most adventurous of the lot. With the sun so low and directly behind me the light fell directly onto a REV's jewel-like eye and reflected like a laser pointer. I still feel somewhat under their spell. Let me shake my head a few times. Nope, doesn't help, still spell-bound. I figured the cool night was the result of drier air from the north and that some birds would likely catch a ride on that descending air mass. I wish I could spend more time out there but duty calls. Alright, alright already ... I'm coming.

Are you sure those are red-eyed vireos? I mean those are really really red. ;) ;)

Are they really Red-eyed vireos? Well, yes. They may have been on a binge with fermented fruit and are hung-over but I think it's the strategic light that mines the colour for all to see. There is no way the eyes would pop like that without the benefit of a low-declination blinding sun. No other time of day would do it.
