So far into January there has been steady visitation to the bird feeder although no improvement vis-a-vis variety. There is steady traffic of BC chickadees and Downy woodpeckers, including juncos, cardinals and doves. Every other day I spot a WB nuthatch but it doesn’t stay for more than a few seconds before flying off again, usually then gone for the day. Occasionally a Hairy woodpecker drops by but the RB woodpecker has not returned since the first two days of the year.
The only new visitor is a pair of White-throated sparrow. They do NOT perch on the feeder but instead search the ground for spill. Sensing any disturbance they both hide under a bush a few meters behind the feeder. Sometimes a cat also hides in that bush. It’s a roaming black cat that disappears in the shadow of the bush so that only its eyes are visible. The other unsupervised cat, the striped one with delusions of being a tiger, leaves the birds alone because it is more interested in pursuing squirrels, a preference which suits me just fine.

I’m not eating wheat germ and that’s final.

I put some food outside of my window so I can watch birds during my class. Your shots are superb! As usual of course.

Good idea. Which birds eat the flowers? Must be a lot warmer where you are. I haven't seen a RB nuthatch yet ... this year.
