Perhaps I should have posted this as a spin off to my recent post on Robins en masse in my back yard.
Lately, with not only the robin activity, plus the Mourning Dove carryings on, and all the other stuff, my friendly neighbourhood hawk has apparently made my backyard a stopping-off point. He/she regularly swings through late in the p.m. scattering the assembled throng.
He has come close with the doves, but I have never seen the hawk successful. Sad really. They have to live too. I have to check the identity, but he/she has been through here last year...
They do learn, I think.

Same here at my place. We have a Sharp Shinned who has been successful twice and a juvenile Cooper's (I think) who has not been. I know the Sharp Shinned has been here before during spring plucking birds from our feeders.
Yes they do learn but pretty hard to be successful in the confines of a backyard! :)

We added a bird feeder to our yard after our cat passed away in July & have had several species of birds frequent the feeder since. Just over the past 3-4 weeks I also have noticed doves swing on by & a Hawk sitting on the tree directly behind our yard. No action though, my neighbor 5 doors down has witnesses successful hunts though.

Years ago I noticed a juvenile male kestrel just sitting on ground in my parents backyard...it didn't fly away when i approached it...turns out he had very little success hunting and was weak from hunger...so I took him to Bernice Inman who apparently nursed him back to health and released him...until then, it never occurred to me that there are raptors who umm...just plain suck at hunting...maybe they're vegetarians...

Hey!!
This morning while looking out our back patio doors(at the green grass) a Sharpie appeared on the chain link fence for a millisecond.
Flew under the skeleton of our trampoline, turned towards our deck then towards the door where I am standing it banked again toward the other set of stairs.
This all at about a foot off of the ground or deck in this case and in a flash. I opened the glass door and looked to my right and there it was on the Neighbours
fence 15 feet away. There were no birds around when this happened. I grabbed the Camera (always handy) and looked again and it was gone.
Napper :)
ps I hope my Ash tree survives this wind storm.. It is nasty out there

Had a Cooper's Hawk hit the tray feeder this morning after it scattered the visiting Siskins, Gold Finches and Mourning Doves(Whitby). Sat there for 30 seconds while I scrambled for the camera. The hawk was unsuccessful and so was I.
I think I'll keep the camera powered up for now on.
