Title: White-winged Crossbill
Post by: Bird Brain on January 04, 2009, 04:58:24 PM
I'm starting to feel like the only person in Ontario lately that hasn't seen any White-winged Crossbill!

Actually, in 15 years of birding, I've never seen any up close - only in photos!

There's been a few hundred in Whitby the last few weeks off Hall's Road/Cranberry Marsh.

It's probably one of the most reliable spots around right now.

I hadn't seen one this winter until yesterday afternoon.  A Sharp-shinned Hawk held one still so I could get a good (but mangled) look. (http://outdoorontario.net/birds/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2382)

I saw them on Hall's Road last weekend.  The first time I'd seen them.

JTF ... Nice to know I'm not alone!

Thank You Kin and Mark.

Brian ... ewwww!    Your photos are beautiful, fascinating and also gross!

I've actually only SEEN small flocks twice this winter myself, but I've heard many more. If you learn their flight call, you'll be much more likely to pick up on their presence if they're in the area (this is true of all the winter finches, but especially the more vocal or distinctive ones like Ev grosbeaks, snow buntings, and crossbills).
A google search will find some hits, but watch out for recordings of their full song, which you're much less likely to hear (song sounds kind of like goldfinch).
Good luck!

David ... Thank You for the excellent suggestion!  I will check out Google a bit later today and perhaps YouTube might have something as well.
