Title: Birds of the "metal" kind!
Post by: Bird Brain on January 07, 2009, 02:04:55 PM
Hi everybody.

One of my other true loves is aviation - birds of the "metal" kind.

I just found out today that I've now become a member of YYZ Airport Watch!  This is a real thrill and honour for me!

It seems that there are some other birders here in this forum that share my love of aviation and are plane spotters also!

Very cool, however I admit, I don't know what that means. Does this qualify you for exemption from harassment by police? If so can I join? :)

Hi Cody.

It's one of two DHC8-Q400's that are supposed to be going to Horizon Air in Seattle.  Two previous ones were flown to Tucson for storage.

btw - Cool sighting of a non-standard 2-tone green c/s!

:D  omg, I LOVE this plane so much!!!  (Aero L-29 Delfin)

I still remember the first time I ever saw this beauty landing at Pearson back on September 22nd, 2007. My excited reaction "Wow, what was THAT?!" (polite version)

Post by: Napper on May 22, 2009, 08:34:46 PM
Hey Attila

I watched the f-18 do its flyover in the morning and then land.

At 3:00 pm The Mig 15  plus the L- 29 and many of the other smaller prop planes took off heading South turned and flew North

At 3:45 pm the Mig and the L-29 did a flypast  and then landed.. Pretty cool

Where you there all day?

Napper :D

I missed the P-51 and the F4U . In the afternoon I was at the South end of the field waiting for my ride home when all of this flying took place.

Post by: Anonymous on May 23, 2009, 02:22:15 AM
Hey there Jo-Anne, glad you love the plane.  :D   It's part of the "Viper North" demonstration team - their other plane is the Mig-15 above.  They'll be appearing at air shows either later this summer or next year.  The team is based out of YYZ and the owners/pilots are 2 of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Napper - I was there for the morning arrivals only as I had some personal business to attend to and needed to get up to Newmarket by 8pm.  I'll be there all day Sunday as most of the aircraft will be departing from noon onwards, which always makes for some nice shots.

Bigfrank,

That would be the Hamilton based Canadian Warplane Heritage's DC-3 which flew in yesterday.  It's a WWII cargo/paratrooper plane.

The Mig and L29, along with other aircraft, were doing media flights yesterday and as such were flying all around the lakefront.  I saw them out in Ajax yesterday as well from my location.

Cheers, and good photo of a classic bird.

Re: Emirates A380 ...

Today: Rwy 6 arrival - the HUGE beast floated on past my balcony and windows!!!

My mom was visiting and all of a sudden I screamed "There it is!!!" and pointed. I was jumping up and down on the balcony clapping my hands and yelling "Woo Hoo!". People walking around Lake Aquitaine here were looking up and looking around wondering who the crazy lady is.

That was awesome!!! How ironic they switched to Rwys 5 and 6 around 3:20pm. Ironic too that I couldn't go to YYZ today and then had a WAY better view from my balcony than if I'd been on Luke Road!  There would have been a lot of ticked off people on Airport Rd. today that were waiting for her to arrive on Rwy 23!    The best part about having a scanner is knowing where to go!  :D

Might go to YYZ on Wednesday to check her out.

Yippee!

Hey

I spotted it at the terminal on the way by Pearson today around 4:15 pm

There be people everywhere looking at it. People on the grass berms near the perimeter fence..

Traffic was terrible. Once past the Airport it picked up again.

What time did it arrive?  I will try and find the archive feed and listen to the approach.  Liveatc

Thanks Jo-Anne, I'm glad that you appreciate them.  :)   If you give me your email address I'll email you a full sized copy of it so that you can print it off for your collection.

Mathew, thanks for the kind words.  It was a hit and miss day with the sun today, hiding when the plane arrived and popping out about 10 minutes after it parked...oh well, what can you do?  :)

As for its size, yes, it is huge enough to make everyone look like this when we stopped for a second from taking pictures:

That being said, it's size is in its height and not in its length.  And with that being said, I'll always believe that the 747 is a much more attractive airframe.

The next few weeks are going to be filled with airplanes for me as next weekend I'll be in Bagotville, PQ, the week after in St. Thomas, and then Orillia and finally Trenton for all the air shows that are going on here in southern Ontario.  While in PQ I'll be stopping at a couple of parks to see if I can find some wildlife to photography should the opportunity arise.

I'll be sure to share some pics with everyone here.  :)

Thanks again, Attila

Title: St Thomas tin birds
Post by: Jimbo on June 10, 2009, 04:10:29 PM
Attila: Too bad you were not in St. Thomas yesterday. The founder of the Red Bull Pylon Racing Events was flying by; had engine trouble;
landed in cornfield short of St Thomas airport and flipped his bird. Sorry no Pics.

Excerpt from St. Thomas Paper...

An internationally renowned stunt pilot was briefly hospitalized Tuesday in St. Thomas after his small plane crashed near the city.

Peter Besenyei, founder of a Red Bull-sponsored air racing competition coming to Windsor this weekend, was bruised after he attempted an emergency landing with engine trouble yesterday afternoon at St. Thomas Municipal Airport but was forced down on approach.

He landed successfully in a farm field south of the airport, Elgin OPP say. But as his plane rolled to a stop, its wheels dug into the ground and the craft flipped.

Hey there Jim,

Yep, I heard about it - glad to hear he's ok.  Should be a great weekend with the Air Race going on out at Windsor!

I'm just finished packing for my trip over to Bagotville QC - departing tomorrow, returning on Wednesday of next week.  Then it's a day to do laundry and upload all my photos (both wildlife and metal birds), which is followed by Friday - Sunday at the St. Thomas show!

Any chance you'll be there?

I'm really looking forward to the next couple of weeks...it's all going to be a blast!

Nice photos Attila!  :)

Sunday was exciting at YYZ with arrival of French Air Force A310 and a MiG-15 (privately owned) zipping in.

Great Summer at Pearson with inaugural flight of Emirates A380, Emperor of Japan - Air Force One (and Two), inaugural flight of Turkish Airlines back on Saturday July 11th, etc.  I was thrilled to see that they used an A340!

Have you seen the new CSA livery?  Very nice!
I'm not overly excited by the new Mexicana livery though.  It's .... ok.

Is this Caribbean Airlines the successor to BWIA?

The hummingbird appears to a broad-billed, which lives in Mexico, not the West Indies!

Pat - yes, CA is the company which took over BWIA.  They are based in Trinidad and Tobago.  As for the Hummingbird, I found this quote referencing it from just before the livery came into being:

Caribbean Airlines

Hey Folks!

While your are on the subject, CNE Airshow.. I am pretty sure I spotted an F-18 on approach into Pearson runway 23  today at around 3:05 pm.

I used to be pretty good at spotting Aircraft.. Airbus 318.319.321 are my worst subject.

Napper))

Oh yeah, and Monday morning at 4:40 am the Space station did a flyby North East of Milton heading towards Toronto.  I Spotted it in an opening in the  broken clouds.

Greetings fellow metal bird watchers :D

I must say that we love our planes as much as we love our birds. Anything that flies will get our attention.
The fascination of flight will always make us look up.
Went to the CNE Airshow on Monday to photograph these flyin' metal birds and had a awsome time!!!!!
Here are some photos from the show..................ENJOY.

From the raptor watch this season, aside from assorted Air Show planes,we saw a Sea King helicopter fly past at close range, naturally noone had a camera ready. Today we saw 2 ..F-33 jets. By default Im learning some of these planes,as we are always looking skyward. My only photo from today is pitifully inadequate when compared with the ones here(aside from the fact I have no clue how to post one here).

I find it sort of stupid that the Waterloo Airshow is going up against high competition with Flyfest going on at the Warplane Museum less then an hour away on the same 2 days. Not too smart thinking.......

Great shots Attila!

Tonight while shooting a Chipping Sparrow which was in great light I had this WWII Harvard flyover. Attila, was this at the Toronto show?

Cody, thanks, glad you enjoy the photos.

That wasn't the Harvard here in Toronto this weekend - I believe it was participating at Southern Wisconsin's Air Fest, or it could have just been one of the many Harvard's out for a flight on this beautiful weekend.

Here's the one that was here at Downsview...

Attila ... How much do I love this a/c and livery!  Your photos are excellent!!!  8)
I saw the L-29 and Mig-15 fly into YYZ earlier today on Rwy 23.

Last night, arrival on Rwy 5 ... 3 German C-160 Transall.  Saw them parked at the North Lounge today.

Also last night, arrival on Rwy 5 ... finally sighted EVA Air for the first time.  What a beauty!

No problem at all Cody, glad I could help. :)

Jo-Anne - sure was a busy weekend.  The hornet actually flew in from Maple Flag out at Cold Lake, same with the German Transalls.

There's been some really amazing photos and lots of great info on this thread, thank you all for sharing!

RFI - I was wondering if anyone would happen to know where I could find out when 'Air Force One' is scheduled to land at Pearson for the G8 Summit.  I would love to be able to see it coming in and hopefully snap a photo or two of it.  It just doesn't come here that often!

Thanks in advance,
Walter

My computers acting wonky...lol

There's a decent chance that all surrounding roads to the airport will be closed as well - specifically Derry and Airport, along with any infield roads as well.

Stick to the feathered birds that weekend. :)

Greetings to all :D

I went to the Waterloo Airshow as well on Sunday and it was the best show that I have ever seen. A special thanks to Jo-Anne who informed me about the event. Had runway seating and great photo opp's of all the planes. The highlight for me was the B-17 Bomber, the smell of it's four roaring engines and sounds of the blades cutting through the air, just awsome!!! I too was a lobster when I got home, but it was worth it. Thanks again Jo-Anne.
Hear are some pics from the show.
Enjoy

Hi all :D

Attila thanks for your remarks, your pics are very nice as well. The lense that I used was a Sigma 50-500mm on all flight and most static shots. The B-17 on the runway was taken with 18-55mm Canon.
All the best

Title: Airshow in my backyard
Post by: Cody on July 12, 2010, 07:21:32 PM
It felt like I had an Airshow in my backyard this weekend :D

Saturday I saw a DC3 getting lined up to do a Hamilton Tigercats flyover.

On Sunday I saw the following:
8 Harvards in 2 groups of 4 side-by-side returning to Tilsonburg.
A Red WWI Fokker Dr. I and a SE5A Side-by-side returning to Brampton.
A Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter flying very distant, also returning to Brampton.

There were several other planes seen, but they were too far away to ID.

Due to the Thunderstorm yesterday afternoon at YYZ, there were several aircraft re-routed to Hamilton, Ottawa, and Niagara Falls,NY. KLM691 using a B744 also flew over my house. That was the modern day highlight to the airshow :o

A total of 15 planes were seen. 14 Warplanes, and 1 Commercial 747.

Due to the Thunderstorm yesterday afternoon at YYZ, there were several aircraft re-routed to Hamilton, Ottawa, and Niagara Falls,NY. KLM691 using a B744 also flew over my house. That was the modern day highlight to the airshow :o

Very cool re: KLM, my #1 all-time favourite commercial a/c!   8)

That was one wicked thunderstorm - it was pouring rain SO hard, it was like a whiteout.  Looking out the window, couldn't see trees, lake, buildings, etc. in the area!     I loved the non-stop lightning and thunder though - went out on the balcony for awhile then things became a little too close for comfort!

Apparently a special livery EVA Air came in tonight.  Unfortunately, found out about it too late.

It's funny to hear that Toronto got hit so hard by that storm. Grimsby had about 2 minutes of light rain

Was this the Special livery on EVA036 tonight?

Question for Attila:

When  you are shooting the planes with propellers....I would like to know if you are using a slow shutter speed?..I tried shooting a plane with props and they looked like they were standing still not moving at all..for example your picture of the Herc...I love the propellers in this..when I take it..the propellers are not even close to what yours look like...can you advise me?

much appreciated

Irene
(The Ex is soon to start so that means the air show is a go! yeehaw)
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on August 07, 2010, 04:40:19 PM
Cody - yes, AN-124.

Irene - yes, I usually switch over to shutter priority (Tv if you use Canon, not sure for Nikon) and set the speed at 200 or below, it really depends on how courageous I'm feeling at that time.  The lowest I've gone is 1/80, but I usually stay around 1/200 as it gives some blur while still maintaining sharpness in the overall quality of the rest of the image.

Best advice I can give you - head out to Pearson and practice on the Dash 8's.  They come in all the time and it gets one used to shooting in settings that become familiar to you.

Cheers, Attila

Post by: ravynne40 on August 07, 2010, 05:01:51 PM
Thanks I will make a note of it (I carry around a little cheat sheet with me) depending on what I'm shooting I like to pre-set the camera before hand too sometimes.
I'll let you know how it works out for me :)

we don't go to the airport too often lol...I'm sensitive to the noise..somedays even my a/c is too loud.

Wow! I was shocked when I first saw JAL8813 on Radar and even better I noticed that its flight path was to go right over Grimsby. I wish I could have gotten better, clearer pictures but these were from my bedroom window and they were pretty far away.

The first plane was a regular scheduled Korean Airlines Cargo Flight 285 from KIAM (Miami) to YYZ (Toronto)
The second plane was Japan Airlines Flight 8813 en-route to YYZ from MTPP (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) at 5:30PM this evening as a Relief flight.

I saw all the usual YYZ flights today from Van Wagner's.    I viewed "Big Blue-KLM 744" and LH A346 through my scope.  Next Saturday I will be heading to YYZ for an ANA Charter flight. Should be fun!

Title: ANA Charter & More today
Post by: Cody on October 02, 2010, 08:27:13 PM
The ANA Charter came in to YYZ today from Japan.  Also, a NAV Canada flight circled over Rwy.23 approx. 25 times, before landing.

what is an ANA flight?
All Nippon Airways.  To make a long story short, Japanese tourists book 747's to come visit Ontario and see our "Fall foliage".

This year,

Flight #1:  Monday, September 20th - drops off tourists.
Flight #2:  Saturday, October 2nd - drops off new tourists, picks up tourists from Flight #1.
Flight #3:  This week - Thursday, October 14th.  To pick up tourists from Flight #2.

And then came JAL.  :D  Speaking of which, JAL (Japan Airlines) is coming in this week on Wednesday, October 13th!  She also came in back on Sunday, October 3rd and Tuesday, October 5th.

btw Axeman ... when I first created this thread, never expected it to "take off" the way it has!  (no pun intended!  ) It was great discovering fellow plane spotters and people that love birds of both the "feathered" kind and the "metal" kind!
Title: Tonight's Full Moon
Post by: Cody on October 22, 2010, 11:16:19 PM
There is certainly a full moon tonight!

1855 tonight- Go in my backyard to check something,  and hear this odd sound getting louder & louder.  "What the hell!" I almost yelled     Look up to see a CF-18 flying over my house :D   Between 1855-1910 tonight I was entertained by a Canadian Air force CF-18 "demo" in my backyard.  Speeds varying from 300-600mph, 10-12 flyovers and the grand finale was a "photo angle", as it was turning for YHM directly over my house! Great "show" , thanks CAF! :D    Was doing a Hamilton Tigercat flyover, preparing for the flyover in Grimsby.

Title: NEWS!
Post by: Cody on December 07, 2010, 07:49:47 PM
Good evening,

Over the past few days, there has been an airshow Convention in Las Vegas. With this convention, came news yesterday, which is good for all of us.

Remember the Blue Angels from last year's CIAS?
They'll be prefroming at the Rochester Air Show, on July 17-18 2011.

Have you ever watched either the Daytona 500 or the Superbowl, and seen the US Thunderbirds fly-past?
They'll be preforming at the Niagara Falls "Thunder over the Falls" show on September 11th/12th weekend. Note: The Airshow is located in Niagara Falls,NY  , located at the Air Force base, the 914TH Airlift Squadron.

The Snowbirds Schedule has also been released for 2011 and 2012. They, as always, will be attend the Toronto show(s).

Hi everyone.  Feeling a little wind blown at the moment!

I was at YYZ this afternoon from 2:15-3:30pm huddled up with lots of people in the Wendy's parking lot - Airport Rd.

Started out with the usual "domestic" boredom - eg. Air Canada and Westjet.

Then it was British Airways B772, reg. #G-VIIS, flight #093 AND Emirates A380, reg. #A6-EDC, flight #241.  My favourite KLM B744 "The Big Blue" went to Rwy 24.   :(

Wind gusts:  38 Knots = 70 km/hr!!!

Quite cold standing out in the open.  I should have gone for a hot chocolate.
