I will be going next week or the week after with a friend to Amherst Island and neither of us have ever been there before. I've found the information about the ferry and the map to get to owl woods. Is there anything else I should know before we go? Thanks :)

Hi Misty001,
I myself have not been to Amherst Island for the purpose of birding but I have been there just to tour the island.....it's a beautiful place in the summer!!! Anyway, I would suggest doing a 'search' of this forum for any recent information and also check OntBirds' website, it has lots of info too. Good luck!

a great place, but the only bathroom is at the ferry dock, note no gas on the island,
there is a small general store very limited items and hours,
owl woods is great but the whole island is worth checking out especialy if your
looking for snowy owls and other large raptors.
have a great trip.

Awsome thanks for the information, esp. the bathroom situation :o
We'll def be touring the island to see what's there, hopefully we'll get a chance to see what all the talk's about!

Just drive around the roads and look on posts; poles etc there are about a dozen for sure. In owl woods depending on the snow over the next week or so you may have to walk in with the south entrance being the shortest, maybe 15 mins or so. There are always sawwhet and long eared in this area, you may find a boreal but they are elusive and move around a
bit. Rough legged hawks; harrier & red-tailed hunting in the fields. Short eared owls can also be seen hunting in the general area and north of owls woods.
