Title: Dark Redtail & brownish Hairy at Mount Pleasant Cemetery
Post by: BC on January 29, 2009, 02:34:55 PM
A friend and I walked Mount Pleasant Cemetery from Yonge to Bayview and back this morning. White-winged Crossbills were active in a few locations. Common Redpolls were seen feeding in a cedar.
Three adult Redtailed Hawks were spotted, all perched and in flight. One had a very light breastband, another had a very dark and complete breastband and a third which was dark all over, right down to the red tail. The dark bird was between Mt. Pleasant and Bayview at Section 28 on the north side around noon. It flew northeast.
I've never seen such a dark Redtail in this area.
Also of note was a male Hairy Woodpecker with a distinctly warmish brown back and wings and a female with some brown on the back. These birds were between Yonge and Mt. Pleasant in the southern valley.
